SH 119 Pedestrian Underpass at Airport Road and Trail, Boulder, CO

LORIS recently finished the design of a pedestrian underpass beneath eastbound SH 119 at Airport Road, an at-grade crossing of westbound SH 119 and approximately 4000 feet of trail adjacent to Airport Road to tie into existing facilities at the Longmont city limits. A high groundwater table, adjacent wetlands and a confining railroad right-of-way necessitated innovative solutions by incorporating a complex drainage and retaining wall system that avoids any right-of-way impacts. Retaining walls required for construction phasing remained in place as a part of the permanent retaining wall solution. The project also includes a temporary shoofly roadway to facilitate two phases of construction, utility relocation, lighting, signal modification, and modifications to existing driveways.
